Frequently Asked Questions

How are you going to make everyone use the same message?
We’re not going to force anyone to use the same message. Many partners have said to us that they would appreciate some support on being able to tie their messages in with each others.

Why should people get involved?
We are trying to develop a set of support tools which are useful to people and which help organisations to reach their own goals.

Segmentation doesn’t work
Segmentation is not the whole answer, and in an ideal world we would market to each person individually. However that is not realistic because of budgets. Segmentation is a good middle ground between marketing to everyone as one group, and to each person individually.

However it is not a cure-all. And must be used in conjunction with local knowledge and understanding. To help with this we are developing the planning tool to show how the segmentation information links with disease prevalence, facility locations and other information.

Why are NHS London in charge of it?
NHS London is simply working with Make Sport Fun to manage the project. They are leading the work on behalf of the Physical Activity Group.

The Physical Activity Steering Group is made up of representatives from Transport for London, Natural England, Sport England, NHS London, Regional Public Health Group, ProActive partnerships and Greater London Authority. All these groups have an interest in getting people active.

What’s in it for me?
The point of this project is to help partners to achieve their own goals. We don’t want to force it on anyone.

All the support we’re developing is based on requests from partners. If you don’t find the support useful then please tell us what would help (email john@makesportfun.com), and we’ll try and find a way to support you and your organisation.

I don’t work in sport, so why would I use the Sport England segmentation?
The Sport England segmentation is the most in-depth piece of research into physical activity and sport ever done in Europe. It covers physical activity as well as sport. We have also worked with Transport for London and the Department of Health research teams to make sure we make full use of the research they have done too

What data does the search box use?
We’ve started off by making a list of all the websites we know of that have info on sport, activity or dance. We’ve then worked with a data entry company to make a note of what is on each site. Organisations have also given us copies of their databases which we use to .

How will the data be kept updated?
We’re doing this trawl of existing websites every 6 months. We’re also making it possible for local providers to update their own information. If you have, or know of a database of local sport or activity then please email it to john@makesportfun.com

How will the data be used?
It will be used to make it easier for the public to find where to play sport or do activity. Nothing else. We absolutely guarantee that this data will not be used for any mailings to the sports clubs, sports centres or anyone else we gather data about. Make Sport Fun (the company we’ve hired to build this system for us) are registered with the Information Commisioner’s Office on the Data Protection register.

Who will maintain ownership of the data
Whoever owns the data now will continue to have complete ownership of their database. We will simply be taking a copy of it.
